Award-winning designer, Simon Henderson, boasts more than two decades of experience in designing and handcrafting fine jewellery and engagement rings.
At just five years old, Simon’s father made him a workbench, from where he began crafting objects. This was a child’s hobby that would eventually lead to a career as an award winning jeweller and a reputation as one of Australia’s most talented fine jewellery designers.
At 10 years old, the power lines in the streets of Simon’s neighbourhood were being removed, so he made use of the discarded copper wire. He began twisting and turning to create jewellery. By 12 he had his sights set on becoming a jeweller and at 14 he began diploma course while still at school.
Following high school, where he studied jewellery making and was awarded for his outstanding performance, Simon went on to tertiary studies in jewellery design. His tutor was experienced in the traditional use of hand-tools, so Simon was able to finely tune the skills he had been developing since childhood. He studied for seven years, mastering the art of true craftsmanship and design.
Simon had now taken his longstanding passion to a new level; he had developed his own style and was awarded many times for it.
In 1995, Simon was invited by the Kailis family to establish the ‘Artisans of the Sea’ fine pearl jewellery workshop in Fremantle, thus beginning his passion for working with the natural beauty of Australian South Sea pearls.
As master jeweller and head designer at Kailis Jewellery for 18 years, Simon played a lead role in the development of the Kailis Jewellery brand, as it became the international benchmark for style, quality and craftsmanship for Australian South Sea pearls.
Simon also has extensive knowledge and experience working not only with pearls, but also with fancy coloured diamonds – particularly Argyle pink diamonds – and rare and exceptional gems.
As a designer, Simon has an innate appreciation for organic form – which is reflected in his creations. His jewellery is sophisticated and versatile. Every element is highly considered and has its place within the piece.
A trend watcher, Simon is conscious of current trends, yet has a resolve to stay ahead of them. He will also often allow himself to simply be guided by the elements he’s working with, such as gold and precious stones. Ultimately, the result will be an iconic piece of fine jewellery that is a striking blend of nature’s treasures and Simon’s incomparable design flair.
